There are two types of Spaceport:
- Planetary surface spaceports are effectively large airports which allow spaceplanes and ion-field flyers to ferry passengers and freight to and from starships in orbit.
- Counter-rotating spaceports are attached to asteroids and habitats and allow starships to dock directly to them.
In pastoral planets, such as Norfolk, spaceports are simple grass-covered landing fields. Stage-one colonies, geared for future industrialization, such as Lalonde, favour tarmac runways, however primitive.
Developed worlds, such as New California, have huge spaceports designed to handle not only goods and passengers from other planets but also any freight from intra-system ships and flights ferrying people to and from asteroid settlements: The San Angeles spaceport is a 10 km² square on the southern rim of the metropolis.
