Former and current inhabitants of the Beyond have stated that, while it is not Heaven, nor Hell, it is "an atrocious existence"....similar to the feeling of drowning and stretching that horrible moment on for an eternity. The sheer prospect of returning to the beyond is a common motivator for the possessed in almost all of their actions in the mortal dimension, and the sheer mention of it as a punishment is enough to keep many of them "in check", so to speak, by higher ranking possessed.

The scope of the Beyond is unknown. The desperate battle of the Valisk habitat ended when Dariat and the habitat's personality, Rubra merged to become a single entity. The habitat then attempted to "jump" clear, leaving only non-possessed inside. The result was a complete shift in the structure's location to the Beyond. The environment of the Beyond is heavily affected by the effect of entropy. Living cells, inanimate objects, electricity, even the surroundings are governed by this state. The temperature is that of in close proximity to absolute zero, while visually it is an almost opaque mist or fog, with no discernable end or beginning. Attempts to determine Valisk's location was met with failure, as sensors and other high resolution probes could not perform their requisite duties due to the rapid depletion of energy due to the entropic nature of the Beyond.

The beyond is the name for the place in which souls reside after death. It is commonly peceived as neither heaven nor hell - purgatory might be the closest equivalent. The souls in the beyond subsist by 'feeding' on one another's memories in what is described as an invasive process. This sampling of memories and experiences is to remind each soul of what it was like to be alive.

A conduit to the beyond is jammed open when a travelling Ly-Cilph goes into hibernation in the middle of a strage energistic flux emanating from a dying man.
